Looking at going cruelty free but need some solid products to start? Check out my top ‘everyday-friendly’ pick from each category of makeup! These have been tried, tested and are well-loved items in my cruelty free collection!
Primer: Becca First Light Priming Filter
I love this primer because it adds a healthy glow to my base makeup. I find the lilac tone helps cancel out redness and adds brightness to my skin. It’s an expensive primer for $65 AUD, but it works well on my dry skin.
Foundation: NYX BB Cream in Light
I could buy four tubes of this foundation for the same price as that primer, but it performs just as well if not better than other high-end foundations I’ve tried. Don’t be fool by it’s name, it’s a medium to full coverage foundation that lasts all day. The only downside is the lack of shades.
Concealer: Tarte Shape Tape in Fair Beige
I finally got sucked in to trying everyone’s favourite concealer, and now it’s my favourite too! You only need a small amount as it’s full coverage and quite thick. It costs about $37 AUD on Tarte’s website, but one Shape Tape will last you a very long time.
Setting powder: Essence All About Matt Fixing Compact
I bought this product after a recommendation from livloveshermakeup on YouTube (she also inspired me to go cruelty-free), and it’s easily the cheapest setting powder I’ve seen on the market.
Bronzer: Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer in Light
This is the first bronzer I tried that didn’t make it look like I’d applied straight up dirt onto my face! If you are new to the world of bronzing/contouring, have fair skin and want something matte, this bronzer is definitely a must-try for you.
Blush: Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Paaarty
I only recently stumbled upon this blush when I received a travel-size as part of my Sephora Birthday Gift. It’s a really pretty mauve-pink shade, and adds a nice wash of colour. The pigmentation is good but not overpowering. Honourable mention: Becca’s Flowerchild (my other cruelty-free favourite)
Highlight: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Rose Quartz
I’m a sucker for light, shimmery highlighters, especially when they are pink! From the gorgeous metallic packaging (Becca always knocks it out of the park!) to the soft pink shift, this highlighter is by far my favourite! It sits in the neutral territory, so should suit most skintones. As this one isn’t available anymore, I recommend Smokey Quartz for those with deeper skintones, or Prismatic Amethyst for those with fair to medium skintones.
Eye primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance
This was another travel-sized item I’ve quickly added to my ‘everyday’ list. It’s got a little bit of colour to it (beige-ish?), so I find it helps conceal redness and little veins around my eyelids. It’s not too thick, but I do find it’s not as liquid-y as other eye primers I’ve tried. It’s a solid performer with all my eyeshadows, including glitter ones!
Eyeshadow palette: Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons
I really wanted to try a Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette, and after looking up plenty of reviews, I knew this cool-toned chocolate-y assortment was the one for me. Was it the heart-shaped pans that cemented my decision? Or the pink shades? Or the variety of neutral tones? (Spoiler alert: it was definitely the hearts). If you’re a beginner or a pro, I think you’ll love this palette for is versatility and variety.
Mascara: Stila Huge Mascara
If you want it to look like you’re wearing natural-looking false lashes, Stila’s mascara is your ticket to long, full lashes! Too Faced also sells a mascara similar to this, but I prefer my Stila as it doesn’t clump up.
Brows: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Taupe
I still feel like there’s room for improvement with my brow application, but the ABH Brow Wiz makes it so easy to fill in and shape my brows! It’s price is quite steep though, so if you can find a shade that matches, try the NYX one instead!
Lips: Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Metallic Rose
Anastasia sure knows how to make a pigmented, comfortable lip gloss. I will throw this on with a light makeup look to give my look a nice pop of colour, or apply it on top of a lipstick if I need the extra comfort and colour. Bonus points: it smells like vanilla cupcakes!
